Ring The Bell Housebreaking your new puppy or dog is one of the more challenging tasks involved in owning a dog. This puts uneccessary stress and frustration on both you and your dog. Try teaching your dog to ring a bell to alert you when it's time to go outside. Start by ringing a small bell each time you open the door to take your dog out for a potty break. Wait until your dog eliminates before letting him back in the house. Ring the bell each time you go outside, repeating this process for several days. After exposing your dog to this process, hang the bell on the door handle so that it is at about nose level. Encourage him to ring the bell when it is time to go outside. You may put a little peanut butter or whip cream on the bell. It won't be long before you will hear the bell ring when it is time for the outdoor potty break.
