Puppy Potty Pads Basic Training

One of the first dog obedience training tasks is potty training. Puppy potty pads are a good way to house train your puppy if you can't watch him all the time or are away from home with him in the house. Puppy pads come in a variety of sizes. They are made of a poly material that is absorbent and specially scented in order to draw puppies to them to eliminate.

Here are six suggestions to help you on your way:

1. Be sure to keep the puppy pads in the same location all the time. You should choose a floor covering that is resistant to stain and easy to clean – accidents do happen.

2. When your puppy begins to show signs that he needs to go, like whining, sniffing or circling, calmly and gently pick him up and put him on the pad. Praise him when he uses it.

3. If you find that your pup won't use the pads, try using a small pen (not his sleeping crate or kennel) to encourage him. Get a crate that's just large enough for him to comfortably stand and turn around in. Place the pads in crate and put the dog in the when he shows signs of needing to go. After he eliminates on the pad (in the crate) praise him. Eventually you can leave the door open for him to go on his own. And sooner or later you can remove the crate entirely.

4. Most dogs do not like to eliminate in the same place they sleep. Be consistent – pay attention for signs that your puppy needs a potty break. If so, take him to the puppy pads and praise him when he goes.

5. Remember, accidents will definitely happen. If you don't actually catch him in the act, don't punish him. Yelling and hitting are unnecessary and could damage his spirit and willingness or understanding to learn. Firmly say no and take him back to the pads. Praise him when he finishes. Use food treats or his favorite toy as a reward and inducement.

6. Try to remain positive and in control. Dog obedience training takes time and patience. Be consistent with the praise when he uses the pads to reinforce what you want him to do.
