Training your dog to walk on a leash is to clearly communicate to your dog, what is acceptable behavior on the leash, and what is not. You can begin this type of dog obedience training as early as 6 months old. Use a light weight collar for pups this young. Place the collar on your puppy. Once your puppy is comfortable wearing the collar you can bring in the leash. All you want to do is just get him comfortable with the leash and demonstrate that it is not a toy or discipline. Let him run around the house or yard with it for a while until he has forgotten about it. Don't let him bite it or try to scratch it off. After your puppy has become acclimated with his new collar and leash it is time to instill some structure into the relationship between the leash, the dog and you. The first few dog obedience sessions should be focused, brief and fun. Your puppy probably already loves just following you around the house. Take advantage of this. Grab the leash and start walking around the house or yard. Your little companion will likely just trot along side you. As long as he accompanies you with a loose leash, praise him and reward with treats. If he pulls on the leash or strains it, do not pull or yank on the leash, stop immediately and call him back over to you. Never continue walking with him pulling on the leash. That will only reinforce bad behavior. It is important that your puppy learns that when he pulls on the leash, he gets nowhere. If he wants to continue walking, it has to heel next to you on a loose leash. The same is true if your puppy sits when you are leash walking. Don't yank the leash, just call him over and reward him when he arrives. Then begin off walking again. All it takes to train your dog how to walk on a leash is patience, perseverance and follow these instructions. You can also teach your dog how to leash walk using the clicker training method.
