Dog Whispering - The Basics

The basic premise about dog whispering is that yelling stern, angry commands such as “sit” and “come here” at our dogs is not only counter productive it can be abusive and painful for them. We instead must learn how to be more aware of their personality, psychology and attentive to their body language as a means of direct communication with them.

We can be far more productive and effective as dog trainers once we know what our dogs are actually communicating to us. Experienced dog whisperers use positive associations to teach appropriate behavior.

Positive association or reinforcement is a gentle but firm method that replaces the command style approach of dog training. Dogs that respond out of fear of punishment aren't trained to respond appropriately, they are simply avoiding punishment by not doing something they specifically know will result in abusive commands or worse. They don't respect you – they fear you.

An experienced dog whisperer uses a style of training that understands what a dog may be thinking and why, then uses that information to build a relationship of mutual trust and loyalty. What most dog owners don't understand is that dogs don't have the same intuition or logic as humans. They have a nature and instinct designed by evolution and until we understand the reasons for their behavior we will be ineffective trainers.

Learning to be a good dog whisperer takes time and patience. But the outcome will be a rewarding relationship and long time companionship with your dog.
