Using a crate training method of housebreaking your puppy or dog is a very effective method for potty training dogs or puppies. Dogs are instinctive animals that spend a lot of time in their dens in the wild. It is generally a place of comfort and security. They also have a natural instinct that prevents them from soiling their den area. This can really make crate training an easy way to housebreak dogs. Choosing the right size crate is important. Select a crate only large enough for your dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down. Otherwise if the crate is too large, your dog will eliminate in one corner and rest comfortably in another, particularly when young because they can't control the bladder muscles as well as older dogs. If you have a young puppy you may have to invest in a couple of them as the dog grows. Alternatively you can buy a crate that is large enough for the dog as an adult and block off the rear of the crate so it is the correct size for the puppy. Simply take some cardboard or scrap wood and place where appropriate to restrict the crate size. There are several types of crates available on the market. Some dogs seem to prefer the quiet privacy of plastic airline type crates. There are cutouts for light and air, but generally are not easily peered into or accessed except through the entrance. Wire crates have the benefit of folding when traveling. Try to find a quiet area in the house for the crate. Avoid kitchens, hallways and doorways so they feel safe and secure without a lot of household traffic. For more great dog crate training tips check out this great insider dog training package.
