Many professional dog trainers claim the kennel crate method of housebreaking your puppy or dog is probably the most effective. By nature dogs are animals that spend a great deal of time in their dens. They like the security and comfort of a small area of their own. The majority of dog breeds also have a natural instinct that prevents them from soiling their den area. If done properly the crate training methodis an easy and effective way to housebreak dogs. Sometimes young puppies need to be encouraged to accept the crate. The quickest and easiest way to do that is with food treats. Placing food in the crate will persuade the dog into the crate on their own. Once they have become accustomed to finding the food in the crate, the next step is to use the food with a command. For instance 'kennel up' or 'den time'. Once in the den it may be necessary to gradually acclimate them. Shutting the door for a few minutes at a time is an effective method and then increasing the time the crate door is closed as your dog becomes more comfortable with the crate. Eventually you will be able to leave the crate door open. Never use the crate as punishment. The crate is a safe and secure environment that should be a source of comfort.
